Title:KEY BATTLES OF THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR
Abstract:American Civil War was by far the bloodiest war between the end of the Napoleonic Wars and the First World War. In this war the United States had the most losses in history. The war has killed more American soldiers than any other in the 20th Century from the First World War to the Vietnam War combined. The war is the military conflict in the years from 1861 to 1865 between the Northern states (the Union) and the Southern states that seceded from the Union and have created Confederate States of America (the Confederacy). In the South the war was known as the War Between the States and also as a War of Resistance (as it was officially called in the Union), the War of Southern Secession and the War of Independence. The name Civil War is the most recognized, though often criticized as being inaccurate. The name Civil War is misleading because it was not a class struggle, but sectional, which had its roots in political, economic, social and psychological elements that are so complex, that historians still disagree on the basic causes of war. The war had more than 10 000 military conflicts in various sizes. In the biggest and most important battles of the Civil War, which we discuss in the thesis, after we reviewed relevant literature and electronic resources, at the beginning, officers and soldiers of the Confederacy proved to be more capable and also showed more heart, but the economical and numerical superiority of the Union ultimately prevailed and it's victory freed the slaves, who were one of the main causes of the war. Of course the credit for the victory of the Union goes to generals and soldiers too, but their actions were not decisive, because the Confederates were just as capable. The matter is best described with the words of one of the Virginians that say: "Never did they beat us, sir, unless there were four times as many. If we had any fair chance, or a smaller difference in numbers, we should have won and gotten our independence."
