Abstract:V pričujočem diplomskem delu smo želeli predstaviti pomen sociološkega definiranja družin. Bernsteinova teorija govori o obstoju razlik v govornem razvoju in jezikovnih primanjkljajih zaradi premalo vzpodbudnega okolja, kar ovira otroka pri šolski uspešnosti. Revnejše družine in manj izobraženi starši nudijo otroku drugačna znanja, vrednote in strategije.

Title:FAMILY ENVIRONMENT AS A FACTOR OF SCHOOL EFFICIENCY
Abstract:In this diploma paper we wished to present the meaning of a sociological definition of families. We analysed the functions of the family and its role in socialisation. Inside the family two main functions take place: reproduction and education of new society members; other important functions are economic and emotional. We were interested in the influence of family socialisation on a child’s success in school as well as in the influence of parenting styles of a father and a mother. Parents choose different parenting styles: from authoritative, democratic to permissive type which is rather widespread nowadays. A mother and a father have very important roles in a child’s life. A mother’s socialization influence on a child’s success in school is strongly noticeable. Researches show that the type, size and structure of the family have no influence on a child’s success in school. Socioeconomic status, consisting of many components, has the biggest influence when it comes to parents` education and not to economic position. Bernstein’s theory shows the existence of differences between speech development and language deficiencies as a result of lack of a stimulating environment that hinders a child’s success in school. Poor families and less educated parents offer their child different knowledge, values and strategies. A research carried out in Slovenia (Flere et al., 2009) showed that cultural capital which is according to Bourdieu the prevailing culture is strongly connected to success in school and brings more benefits to children from lower social classes.
