Abstract:Osteoporoza je sistemska kostna bolezen, ki jo označujejo nizka mineralna gostota in strukturne spremembe, ki zmanjšajo kostno trdnost in povečajo nagnjenost k zlomom.

Title:Elderly people with osteoporosis in the local community
Abstract:Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease characterized by low mineral density and structural changes that consequently decrease bone mass and increase susceptibility to fracture. Osteoporosis is a condition that affects merely skeletal system and not the entire body. The disease includes increased bone fragility, which results in fractures even after a mild strain or a minor injury. The disease mostly affects women and general elderly population. There are various medications available for treating osteoporosis that are helpful for preventing bone decay as well as the ones that stimulate new bone formation. Throughout the research, we wanted to determine the elderly persons’ knowledge of risk factors to help prevent osteoporosis in their everyday environment. We wanted to become aware of the ways in which they are involved in the activities of the osteoporosis societies, the difficulties they encounter on account of the disease, their knowledge of preventing the disease and its difficulties, the purpose of being involved in the associations, and the patients’ desire for additional information. 80 members of the osteoporosis patient societies in Slovenia were included in the research. With the help of a questionnaire, we acquired answers to preliminary questions. We discovered that 69 members (86 %) try to prevent osteoporosis by eating foods containing high levels of calcium. As the most common reason for getting involved in the osteoporosis society activities, 66 members (82 %) stated gaining knowledge of the disease. 67 members (84 %) mentioned that they take part in the society activities mostly due to bone density testing. Most frequently, namely 64 members (80 %), attend excursions arranged by the associations. 65 members (81 %) alleged height loss as the most common difficulty they encounter due to osteoporosis. Elderly persons with osteoporosis in the associations get much more information on the disease, which is why they are more devoted to health care. Within the provided activities, the associations contribute to patients’ optimal quality of life. In this manner, the patients are much more aware of their disease and thus able to pay greater attention to its management.
