Abstract:V diplomski nalogi je prikazan potek iransko-iraške vojne, zakaj je do konflikta sploh prišlo in kako se je le ta končal. Tretje države so bile vpletene zaradi različnih razlogov. Nekatere so odkrito podpirale eno od sprtih strani, nekatere so poslovale z državama v vojni in jim prodajale orožje oz. kupovale njuno nafto, spet nekatere pa so postale vpletene zgolj zaradi svoje geografske bližine in so pogosto posledično tudi same postale tarča napadov.

Title:IRAN - IRAQ WAR
Abstract:My thesis demonstrates the progression of the Iran-Iraq war, the resolution behind the conflict and its resolution. The war is considered to be the bloodiest conflict since World War II, as it claimed over a million lives, maybe even two million, according to some estimates. It is a well-established fact that any conflict has mostly negative consequences, such as a great number of casualties, financial loss, destruction, etc., and the Iraq-Iran war was no exception, since neither party had much to gain from military action. The border between the two countries, as well as their political relations, remained the same. The two main reasons behind the conflict are the dispute over the oil-rich province of Kuzestan and Iraq's desire for control over the Shatt Al-Arab River. It was later established that neither conflict was resolved, since Kuzestan currently remains under the jurisdiction of Iran, while the border between the countries is still drawn by the Shatt Al-Arab River. We now recognize that similarly to other conflicts in modern times, intelligence played a key role. Intelligence agencies such as SAVAK, VEVAK and Mukhabarat operated either in the favour of Iran or Iraq before and during the war, but nonetheless did not conduct themselves in a manner of other intelligence agencies around the world. In addition to usual intelligence tasks, they did the ‘dirty’ work on behalf of their governments, committing mass murder of political opponents at home and abroad. Although the conflict is called the Iran-Iraq war, many other countries were involved in the conflict, for different reasons. Some openly supported one side of the other, while others did business with the two countries, having been involved in arms trading or the purchase of oil, while some got involved because of their geographical proximity and often became targets of attacks.
