Title:THE EFFECT SYNTHETIC ZEOLITES 4A AND 13X ON SWINE SLURRY
Abstract:An experiment to determine the effect of the use of synthetic zeolites 4A and 13X in swine slurry was carried out in the Pig Research Centre of Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences in cooperation with Silkem d.o.o (Kidričevo). The aim of the experiments was to reduce unpleasant odour in agricultural production, which is an important goal for its survival, namely EU trends to change environmental standards and legislation can be observed due to requirements for a higher quality of coexistence between farmers and the rest of the population. We believe that the topic of our work is meaningful and relevant. In the experiment, mixed slurry was placed in sixteen identical containers. Eight of them were used for testing zeolite 4A and the other eight to test zeolite 13X. Each zeolite was added in the slurry in different concentrations 0 g/L (control), 4 g/L, 8 g/L and 12 g/L. In the 3rd and 4th week of the experiment, we additionally tested zeolite 4A with the maximum concentration of 30 g/L. The experiment was carried out from 11 June 2011 to 10 August 2011 (one month). Hand and machine mixing of slurry as well as the measurements of temperature and pH were performed every day at the same time. Samples were taken once a week and transported to the Ikema laboratory, where chemical analysis of total and ammoniacal nitrogen, phosphorus, total organic carbon, potassium and dry matter in pig slurry was performed. The aim of the experiment was to determine if zeolite supplementation could reduce the presence of certain chemical compounds in the slurry and thus consequently reduce odors. The results indicated the desired activity of zeolites. However, big variability of the data does not enable to draw definite scientific conclusions. Experimental in laboratory staff could organoleptically detect the reduction of odor, but no appropriate method was available to prove this perception.
