Abstract:Slovenian police has several objectives and directions, while its main objective is certainly to provide internal security in the Republic of Slovenia. In order to perform daily police tasks, above all excellent physical condition and highly developed motor abilities of police officers are required. These two factors largely enable greater efficiency and confidence at work, while they also help to maintain good health, increase accuracy in the use of instruments of constraint, especially weapons (firearms), and help in reducing stress at work. In Slovenia, all candidates who want to work at the police must conduct a test of motor abilities, among other things. Tests of motor abilities were used in the empirical study, which covered a sample of 3.479 police officer candidates and candidates for the police officers for protection of state border. The study showed high performance of the tests, differences in results between men and women, and in some of the individual tests, differences between the candidates for police officer and the candidates for police officers for protection of state border. The reasons for the differences were attributed to various factors such as poorer physical condition, lack of motivation and an unhealthy lifestyle. In the conclusion, we have proposed raising the bar criteria for passing the test, which would enable the police to draft the best among the candidates, and suggested possible changes in conducting the motor abilities testing which would better reflect the work of the police officer in everyday situations.
