Abstract:By joining NATO organization in 2004, Slovenia has entered in a system of collective defense and at the same time committed itself to participate in the operations necessary for creating global security. In March 2004, Slovenian Ministry of Defence sent 1. Contingent of Slovenian armed forces on a peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan, where they were responsible for reconnaissance, military presence, protection and support of the international community. Up until april 27, 2012, the Ministry of Defence deployed 17 contingents on ISAF mission in Afghanistan, which included more than a thousand members of the Slovenian Armed Forces and civilian experts. In the past Afghanistan has been a shelter for terrorist organization Al-Qaeda which was also the reason that the UN decided to intervene. Later on, the UN handed the organization and command over the ISAF forces to the NATO organization. The expected presence of NATO organization and ISAF forces in Afghanistan, including the Slovenian soldiers, is untill 2014 because by then the situation is expected to stabilize, and Afghan government authorities, army and police should take care of the security of their citizens. However, this is questionable, if this will really happen and whether or not the international forces will remain in the country after 2014.
