Abstract:Rod Aster prvotno izhaja iz Severne in Južne Amerike.

Title:Reproductive biology of invasive species Aster squamatus in the Slovenian coastal habitats
Abstract:The genus Aster is native to North and South America and species belonging to this genus are naturalized worldwide, especially in saline and humid habitats. Aster squamatus is a hemicryptophyte originating from central South America, but has spread to many countries around the world, including in Slovenia. The first record of A. squamatus in Slovenia was noted in 1973 by Wraber and the species is constantly present since then. Even though it is not invasive, where present, its occurrence is disturbing, especially, the occurrence near the two most important coastal wetlands along Slovenian coast – in Sečovlje salina and Škocjan inlet, representing various Natura 2000 habitats. Topic or issue of this thesis is based on research of reproductive capacity of the species A. squamatus and correlated with its potential invasiveness on Slovenian territory. Research was conducted in three stages. In the first part of the research we carried out the selection and documentation of the growing area as well as the sampling of plant specimens and soil. In the second part we carried out the analysis of soil and we tested seeds for germination rate in laboratory conditions. This was followed by data processing of results and discussion, in which we came to the key findings, that A. squamatus has a high reproductive potential, which increases with the height of the plant. Calculation show that plants smaller than 110 cm could bear from about 700 to 8.700 seeds while plants taller than 110 cm produce at least five times more seeds from about 47.000 to 70.000 seeds. According to the results of soil samples it can be concluded that the amount of nutrient content in the soil does not significantly affect the development and growth of A. squamatus. Despite the fact that A. squamatus for now does not threaten our native species more seriously, it would be desirable on a precautionary basis, higher plants should be removed from occupied habitats.
