Title:SPEECH IN TALK SHOWS OF RADIO CELJE
Abstract:Recently, linguistic deviations from the norm have been appearing on all Slovenian radio stations. We have researched the spontaneous speech in talk shows at the regional radio station of special significance Radio Celje, with speech related findings pertaining this station following. We were interested in the reason behind the use of the colloquial standard Slovenian of the Celje region by the hosts of talk shows, whereby they cross from the contemporary standard Slovenian into the colloquial one and why these hosts are not adequately qualified. We have discovered that by using the colloquial variants, the hosts of the talk shows wish to reach their listeners and let them know they are equals. They want to achieve a vivacity of language, be humorous and interesting, at the same time showing the listeners that they are nonetheless well acquainted with the standard Slovenian, which they try to prove by switching between the variants. The text analysis has further shown that the hosts are not adequately qualified in terms of speech, which is the consequence of the economic situation and the influence of the colloquial way of speaking at the commercial radio stations, which started to appear in the Celje region in the early nineties of the previous century. However, the hosts are well aware that the radio stations have become the carriers of the contemporary standard Slovenian and that they should do more in terms of their qualification, since their speech is a way of educating their listeners. The latter expect the hosts to use the contemporary standard Slovenian, and the analysis has shown that it is often the nonprofessional speakers who take into account the standard more than the professional speakers.
