Title:Web portal for physics excercises interchange
Abstract:Web portals are older than the LMS (learning management systems). If they are only the data archive (passive content) they are considered Web 1.0 technology but if they allow users to participate in content editing and creation (active content) then they are considered Web 2.0 technology. In this diploma thesis the web portal for physics exercises interchange is presented. Guest users can view exercises and their solutions. Authorised users are able to publish new exercises and solve the published exercises. Due to the predicted long life span of the portal exercises need to be manualy categorized in order to enable fast search. The exercises are categorized based on the topic and difficulty. They can benefit the students and teachers as well. Teachers can find many exercises in the web portal, which they can use for lectures or for exams. Students can also find the same exercises for them to solve and review proper solutions. The benefit of the web portal compared to the textbook is that the portal enables dynamic addition of multiple solutions for exercises that students can review in their study.. If the excercise solution is accidentally incorrect, it can be easily corrected, unlike the mistakes in the textbooks. Mistakes in printed media can present frustrations to the students who come up with proper solutions but different than the one presented in the textbook. The thesis first summarizes the characteristics of web portals and the features of the technologies used to build this web portal. Use of SESSION, GET and POST variables is presented together with PHP. Due to the changes of used technology and increasing use of tablet PCs HTML5 is presented. All the HTML5 novelties used to build this web portal are explained. Some of the novelties are not yet standardized therefore they are explained in detail in the thesis using standard programming documentation specifications. Although the CSS technology is present for a long time already, it still has compatibility issues. These issues and their fixes are also a part of the thesis. Towards the end of the thesis the structure of the database is presented. DB (database) is the core of the web portal and stores all necessary data for operation. Installation instructions follow previous text. Web portal was not only designed and implemented but it is already published for testing. Students provide valuable feedback and enable user experience enhancement in the V&V process (verification and validation). Users' feedbacks are also inconcluded in the thesis.
