Avtorici v svojih romanih izpostavita motive kulinarike, erotike, materinstva in pisateljevanja, skozi katere spoznavamo ženske like in njihovo aktivnost nasploh.

Title:MAGICAL REALISM AND THE MATTER OF FEMALE EMANCIPATION IN THE NOVELS OF ISABEL ALLENDE AND LAURA ESQUIVEL
Abstract:In my diploma paper I was trying to analyse the elements of magical realism in the works of Isabel Allende and Laura Esquvel, who both originate from Latin America. Those two novelists are the representatives of magical realism, which is most common linked to Gabriel Gárcia Márquez, the doyen of Latin-American literary opus. These two female authors are dealing with several topics; like revolution or travesty. There we can notice the elements of female emancipation in the novels: House of the Spirits, Eva Luna, Aphrodite: A memoir of the senses and Like Water for Chocolate because the female characters are acting pretty unconventional and mostly in contrast to expectations of patriarchal society. The women take part in the storyline in various manners; they can be active, non-active or they distance themselves from the events. The male characters can act towards women, society and the events on passive, active and non-active manner. The authors present in their novels the subjects like cookery, erotica, motherhood and story writing, where the activity of the female characters is evident. The female participation in the society is often accompanied with the elements of magical realism, such as: cyclic time, indication to Pre-Columbian cultures, supernatural occurrences, authorial silence and the appearance of metafiction. Both authors come from the countries, where the revolutions changed the course of history so this is the reason why the time of the stories is set in the period of revolutionary movements; there is also a matriarchy present in the storyline, besides patriarchate. Many female characters are trying to oppose traditional patterns of society, which is mostly rejected by their fathers, brother and spouses. It is interesting that in those attempts of rebelling against tradition frequently appear the elements of magical realism which emphasize the female tendency towards emancipation.
