Title:EATING HABITS OF STUDENTS FROM FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES MARIBOR
Abstract:The purpose of this study was to use a standardized questionnaire to explore and show eating habits of students from the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Maribor, and to present their opinion on subsidized student nutrition. The thesis describes healthy eating guidelines for students, their energy needs and menu planning in the daily diet of students. Research methodology. We carried out a transparent cross-sectional population-based epidemiological study, which was made on a sample of 100 students from the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Maribor. The research was carried out using modified questionnaire Cindi Slovenia: "Health-related behavioural style." The study was based on personal reports on their eating habits and opinion on subsidized student meals. Data was analyzed by different statistical methods. Results. The results show that male students from the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Maribor more often eat fast food than their female schoolmates and less often chose a healthy diet, and in addition often add salt to their meals. Study also shows that current knowledge about healthy diet does not affect body mass index and that students with normal body mass index do not eat healthier than their classmates with excessive body mass index. As to the results of student satisfaction with subsidized food it can be concluded that students who are use of subsidized food more often, are more satisfied with it than those who rarely eat it. The analysis also showed that the higher the year of study, the lower the consuption frequency of subsidized student meals. The survey results were compared with the results of a national survey "Risk factors for non-contagious diseases in the adult population of Slovenia 2008 - Health-related behavioural style" and we have not noticed significant statistical differences between the two. Conclusion. Unhealthy eating habits, particularly inappropriate choice of food and irregular eating can cause malaise and decreased productivity, and have and impact on the resistance of the organism and pose a risk factor for development of chronic non-communicable diseases in later life. It is therefore very important to start raising the awareness of the younger generation about a healthy youth and older age.
