Abstract:When a firearm is discharged, a projectile is propelled out of its barrel along with unburnt and partially burnt gunpowder particles, which are crucial for determining the firing distance and the classification of the crime. The amount and composition of these particles depends mostly on the type of firearm, type and quality of ammunition, as well as the condition of the firearm's barrel. The range of these particles depends on their mass, velocity and firearm used. With short-barrel firearms the range is up to 100 cm, whereas with long-barrel firearms the range is up to 180 cm. The location and distribution of gunpowder particles found on a victim's clothing or on other items are inspected and evidenced by chemical tests. These require the use of different reagents, which produce specific colour reactions. Gunshot injuries are the type of physical trauma which are also important for clearing up a crime. Also known as bullet wounds or medically as ballistic trauma they can be divided into three types: bullet hole, single-entrance wound and flesh wound.
