Title:The nurse as a team leader
Abstract:Leading, which is one of the functions of management, is a process in which the subordinates are influenced by their leader in order to achieve wanted objectives. Leader’s responsibilities are not only planning, organizing, coordinating, supervising and delegating work, but also motivating employees and encouraging such relationships in a team that are based on mutual trust, cooperation, mutual assistance, and honest and open communication. The purpose of this thesis is to present leading as a function of management, and nurse as a nursing team leader. With this study, we wanted to determine which style of leadership nurses often use, how they motivate their subordinates, which are the most important characteristics of leaders, and learn about the factors that influence the effectiveness of teamwork. A survey was conducted, with the research method of a questionnaire, in organizational units of UKC Maribor, where 45 nurses (hereinafter interviewees) were interviewed, which are working in the field of nursing management team, nursing department management and health care clinics management. The results of the study showed that interviewees most commonly use integrated and democratic management style in their work. They motivate their subordinates primarily by creating a positive atmosphere of the team, with verbal praise of individuals and the entire nursing team, by providing feedback on the work, and by allowing members of the nursing team to co-determine decisions. The most important characteristics of a good leader that the interviewees also apply to themselves are honesty, responsibility and positive attitude. The success of teamwork is, according to the interviewees, most strongly affected by open and honest communication and a positive climate in the team. It is important, in health care organizations, that we have adequately trained nursing team leaders. Leading, promoting teamwork and motivating the employees are important skills which affect the achievement of wanted objectives and also the quality of the provided nursing care. Therefore, these are the following suggestions for clinical environment: education in the field of leadership and motivation, and obtaining information by the leaders from their subordinates regarding the satisfaction with their leadership.
