Svoje ekspanzionistične cilje so razširili vse do severne Afrike in Male Azije, kjer so ustanavljali svoje kneževine.

Title:THE NORMANS AND MEDIEVAL SICILY
Abstract:The diploma thesis, entitled Normans and medieval Sicily, discusses Norman people, from the time of their occurrence in Scandinavia, through to arrival in the Mediterranean. Their story began at the end of the eighth century, when they started with the first invasions on the British island. In the nearly two centuries they've managed to reach all corners of the European continent, crossed the Atlantic and established a settlement in the New World. They extended their power all the way to the Black Sea in the east and all the way to the shores of North Africa in the southwest. The thesis mainly focuses on extension power in the Mediterranean. In southern Italy the Normans first began to appear in the early 11th century as the mercenaries, hired by local nobles, who took part in military expeditions against the Byzantines, Arabs, and other local rulers. Within a few decades they have managed to expand their influence, gradually seized power of southern Italy, conquered Sicily, and established one of the most powerful European kingdoms of that time. The Hauteville family from Normandy had the major role in all that. Their expansionist goals have expanded to northern Africa and Asia Minor, where they were establishing their principalities. Their reign strongly changed the fate of southern Italy and Sicily, and they played an important role in the Christian forces by ceasing the increasing advance of Islam in Europe.
