Abstract:Marjan Tomšič je slovenski pisatelj in kulturni delavec. Do sedaj je objavil enajst romanov, osem zbirk novel in črtic in osem mladinskih del. Svoj poklic so opravljale vestno, z neizmernim veseljem in ljubeznijo, kljub vsem mukam in težavam, ki so jih ob tem doživljale.

Title:THE ŠAVRINKA CHARACTER IN THE LITERARY WORKS OF MARJAN TOMŠIČ
Abstract:Marjan Tomšič is a Slovene writer and cultural worker. So far he has published eleven novels, eight collections of novellas and sketches and eight books for young readers. He has received many awards for his work and has vastly contributed to the literary development of the Slovene Istria. The purpose of my diploma thesis is to define the Šavrinka character in his literary work. The character of Šavrinka is a central character in the novels »Šavrinke« (The Šavrinkas) and »Zrno od frmentona« (The Grain of Corn). Through Katina's story, whose occupation is Šavrinka, I presented the personality of a Šavrinka, what she was like in the roles of a mother and a wife, what the relationships among Šavrinkas were, and who were the people who practised this occupation and what their lives were like. The Šavrinkas circled around Istria on foot as ceaseless walkers and then they headed towards Trieste to trade hundreds of eggs and other goods for liras. They walked with a basket on their heads or with a donkey, if only they had one. Together with “jajčarice” (women selling eggs), also “mlekarice” (women selling milk), “krušarice” (women selling bread) and washer women walked to Trieste. All these women were always known solely as Šavrinkas and they themselves thought of themselves as such. They performed their job conscientiously, with immense pleasure and love, despite all the pain and trouble they had to struggle with while doing it. They were dedicated and all their lives they worked hard for the sake of their families, as long as they were able to walk such long distances. Then the occupation was handed down to their daughters or nieces.
