Title:THE HISTORICAL ROLE OF ANCIENT RHETORIC FROM HOMER TO ST. AUGUSTINE
Abstract:This thesis with the title The Historical Role of Ancient Rhetoric from Homer to St. Augustine presents the early beginnings of rhetoric with an emphasis on the evolution of rhetoric in Ancient Greece and Rome as well as the influence of ancient rhetoric on early Christianity and later periods. This thesis presents all the major rhetoricians of Ancient Greece – Isocrates, the founder of the European concept of general education; Demosthenes, the most famous orator in the history of public speaking; and Lysias, who presented a detailed overview of the government practices at the time. By being the best Roman rhetorician, Cicero is of course given special attention. As an example of his political debates, one of his speeches against Catiline is further explored in this thesis. In the part dedicated to Christianity the main focus is on St. Augustine, who is believed to be the most innovative among early Christian thinkers. The last part of this thesis touches upon rhetoric in the Middle Ages, where it also starts to wane. Through centuries rhetoricians further complemented and expanded their speeches by learning from their predecessors and imitating them.
