Abstract:V raziskavi smo preučevali vpliv lonžiranja na vsebnost stresnega hormona kortizola v slini islandskih konj.

Title:Estimation of stress in horses through the saliva cortisol concentration
Abstract:The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of lungeing on the concentration of saliva stress hormone cortisol in the Icelandic horses. The experiment was carried out in March and April 2011 on a family farm Hetja located in Spodnji Gasteraj. The study comprised four horses of the Icelandic breed (2 mares, 2 castrates). Lungeing which consisted of stroke, trot and canter and lasted for 30 minutes. Saliva samples of each horse were taken 3 to 4 times during the experiment in the same sequence, i.e. before the beginning of the activity and immediately after the activity. Saliva cortisol concentrations were determined in duplicates using a commercial kit for biochemical assay of cortisol (Cortisol ELISA RE52611). The effect of lungeing on saliva cortisol levels was analysed using t-test. Average cortisol concentration before lungeing amounted to 0.131 mg/dl (between 0.025 and 0.211 mg/dL) and to 0.127 mg/dL (between 0.035 and 0.236 mg/dL) after lungeing. The results showed no significant effect of lungeing, which indicated that studied activity did not cause stress in Icelandic horses.
