Title:THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN COMMON SENSE AND SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATIONS OF BELIEF IN GOD
Abstract:The basis of the present thesis is to discuss the relationship between common sense arguments for faith in God and the scientific view on this area. On this basis, we've stated six assumptions in the context of the theoretical part as to why people should believe in God. Presentation of scientific interpretations of the religion with the authors and the description of interpretations and research that have emerged so far is based on the origin of religion as a reasonable interpretation of the life and of the world, the source of consolation. We have analyzed the Durkheim sociologistic conception of religion, studied religion as a byproduct of the innate cognitive patterns and product trends in the rational selection, but we also emphasized the experiential basis of religion. In the empirical part of the tasks we have, based on the presented theory and with the help of qualitative data collection searched for the reasons for faith in God, with whom we explain an individual's tendencies to faith and belief. With the help of the sixteen participants who have participated in a partly-structured interview, which we carried out at the time of the quintessential Christian holiday Easter in the pilgrimage place called Međugorje, we checked, why individuals, according to their own assessment, believe in God, what kind of common sense reasoning religion dominated in the believers and what their perceptions of God are. Purpose and objective of the empirical part of the graduation work is to display and link to specific opinions, views and perspectives of the participating followers, and compare them with existing theoretical approaches. The analysis of the interviews, which was based on a very biased sample of subjective assessments of non-professionals, showed that the greatest significance for the individual's faith is attributed to the need for comfort. This is followed by the motif of experiences, socialization, rational choice and intellectual search for answers. It turns out that the estimates about the opinion of the respondents, in terms of origin of religiosity, differ significantly from scientific views. The differences are reflected mainly in the sense of socialization. From the scientific literature it is clear that the religious socialization is essential to the majority of the participating individual religiosity respondents, however, it is clear that religious socialization is an important reason for their current belief. Furthermore, its presence shows great importance in nearly all of the participants, but as you can deduce from the results, you can only develop socialization religiosity without condition to express the need for comfort and experience the religious experience. According to our findings, the need for comforting and experience are the key motivators, which puts some of the scientific theories under question.
