Title:Weibull distribution of the measured strength of ceramic samples
Abstract:The maximum stress a ceramic specimen can withstand depends on random distribution of defects in the material. A large set of experimental values can be described with two-parametric Weibull distribution; the scale parameter σ0 is proportional to the mean strength, the Weibull modulus m depends on the width of the distribution. Both values are important in research of new materials and in production quality control. In the thesis, statistical methods for evaluation of the Weibull parameters are studied. A large set of 5100 experimental data from the company Hidria AET and Monte Carlo simulated data are used. Four statistical methods are tested: the histogram method, three variants of the linear regression, the maximum-likelihood and the method of moments. The histogram method can be used only for a large amount of the measured data. The analysis proves that the measured data agrees very well with the Weibull distribution. However, there are small deviations at very small and very high strengths - in the regions with very small number of the measured data. Due to the large set of the measured data all the tested methods yield similar values of the Weibull parameters, especially for the scale parameter. But in practice, only short sets are available. Therefore a large number of shorter sets of the measured and the simulated data are constructed and the Weibull parameters are calculated for each set. Results of the employed statistical methods differ for the short sets: the linear regression is the most reliable method; σ0 can be determined more reliably than m. The most important result of this work is a decrease in the value of the Weibull modulus in sets with the shuffled experimental data relative to the values obtained from sets in chronometric order, reflecting quality oscillations in the production series of ceramic specimens.
