Abstract:General declaration of human rights states that every person has the right to education. According to the White Paper on Education in the Republic of Slovenia the country must provide free education at least in the pre-university period, and the parents are according to Article 103 of the Marriage and Family Relations Act (Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, nos. 69/2004) obliged to the best of their abilities take care of their children's education according to their abilities, interests and wishes. Parents should enrol their children to the local school within their school district, however this is not obligatory. The children can be enrolled in a school outside the local school district if the school agrees within its capacities and the law. The parents’ choice of primary school for their children is influenced by several factors. This thesis analyses the factors that parents of future pupils regard as important about the school that their child will attend. The research has shown that the most important factors are those connected to the impediments to other nationalities and cultures, the factors associated with practical or personal reasons, factors associated with “the reputation” of school, the school building and surroundings, and factors including the employees and their relationships and relationships towards the pupils. The research has also shown that majority of parents, however, still chooses the school within their local school district.
