Abstract:Družinska podjetja so pomemben člen v ekonomijah po svetu in pri nas.

Title:BENEFITS AND DISADVANTAGES IN FAMILY BUSINESSES - CASE OF SLOVENIA
Abstract:Family businesses represent an important part of the worldwide economies and also of Slovenia. Because of the lack of a uniform definition of a family business, it is difficult to determine the exact proportions of these type of businesses among the small and medium-sized enterprises. Nevertheless, according to assessment of some approximations made, the estimated share of family businesses in Europe varies between 70 and 80%, while in Slovenia it is 40 to 50%. Family businesses have many benefits, but at the same time can also pose some difficulties. In comparison with the non-family businesses, they are perceived as more committed to the business and family, having more knowledge and experience, being more flexible in terms of time, work and money and as thinking and planning more long-term. In a family business one can observe also a stable culture, while its members demonstrate reliability and pride in the name of family. Moreover, decisions are seen as taken sooner. In contrast with the above, they can be faced by difficulties such as rigidity and a number of business results (modernisation of outdated management methods, transition management, raising of capital). A very sensitive topic is also the concept of succession; if this is not well organised then the problems of leadership and legitimacy may arise in addition. Family businessses can also be affected by emotions and some conflicting relationships (nepotism, owner, syndrome of a spoilt child, the war of roses, the rivalry between the children, the father's dominant behavior). The company can also be exploited by family members who contribute little or nothing to the business, and there might be a problem of the in-laws marrying the family members. Management posts for non-family members are therefore not so attractive.
