Abstract:Pogoj za uspešno književno prevajanje je odlično poznavanje ciljnega jezika in kulture, predvsem pri prevajanju pogovorne govorice. Tema magistrskega dela sta sleng in pogovorni jezik v romanu ameriškega pisatelja J. D. Salingerja z naslovom The Catcher in the Rye.

Title:TRANSLATING COLLOQUIAL LANGUAGE AND SLANG IN THE NOVEL THE CATCHER IN THE RYE
Abstract:In order to be successful at literary translation, the translator must possess excellent knowledge of the target language and culture, especially when dealing with the translation of colloquial language. This study focuses on slang and colloquial language in the novel The Catcher in the Rye, written by an American author J. D. Salinger. The narrator and main character of the novel is Holden Caulfield, who expresses his teenage anxiety by using expressive language, especially slang. Elements of slang can also be found in the Slovene translation of the novel, »Varuh v rži«. The core of the analysis is a comparison of the original The Catcher in the Rye (Salinger, 1965) and the Slovene translation »Varuh v rži« (Salinger, 2002). A part of it also compares both Slovene translations »Varuh mlade rži« (1990) and »Varuh v rži« (2002), both translated by Boris Jukić. Differences between source and target culture can cause changes in the translation process, especially when translating colloquial language and slang. Those differences can be minimized by adapting the translation. The theorethical base for the analysis was the skopos theory by Hans Vermeer, which takes into account the function of both the source and target text while preserving purpose over form. According to the comparison of the novel and its translation, slang and colloquial language are equally present in both texts, even though the translator had to adapt the target text in order to achieve the same purpose. The differences in the translation are connected with the word form and sentence structure, which can be attributed to differences between the two languages.
