Title:QUALITY OF LIFE AND THE ABILITY OF ACCEPTING DIABETES IN OLD AGE
Abstract:Diabetes type 2 is one of the most widespread chronic diseases that cannot be cured and accompanies the patient until the end of his life. It often affects old people. In the theoretical part we have introduced diabetes, its symptoms and healing methods. Timely revealed symptoms, disease awareness and the cooperation between patient and doctor have an important impact on slowing down the progression of diabetes and on the prevention of complications and, thus, enable patients health-related quality of life. In the empirical part we have presented two old people, a man and a woman, both with diabetes type 2 being confronted with difficulties and disabilities in everday life. We have presented two research studies of a care by the help of a guided conversation. The intention of the empirical part was to present eventual differences between the two sexes in regard to the disease acceptance, to the adaptation to the disease, to the ability to cope with it and to its impact on the quality of their life in the home environment. In the study of the case we have established that the diabetes acceptance incites fear in both patients, because of the feeling that the disease cannot be cured, at the same time they are burdened with regular disease monitoring and restrictions in everyday life. When chronic complications appear, diabetes type 2 can have, irrespective of sex, a negative impact on the quality of life of older people. The increased blood sugar can gradually lead to the damage of the nervous system, to the damage of eyes, kidneys and larger veins. The progression or failure of treatment of the disease may damage leg veins what can lead to diabetic gangrene or even to amputation. When patients, owing to worsening of the disease, are not completely in control of diabetes anymore, then they are physically and socially burdened, and as a consequence all this gradually affects negatively the quality of life.
