Abstract:Chemical weapons have been used in conflicts since World War I. The latest example of the use of chemical weapons in an armed conflict is in the Syrian civil war. In the following thesis the concept of chemical weapons is explained, different kinds of chemical weapons are described and clinical signs of poisoning with chemical weapons are pointed out. We also learn about safeguards in the event of a chemical attack and find out different ways of decontamination after exposure. The course of the Syrian civil war since its inception is described, with the focus on the attack with chemical weapons in the suburbs of Damascus. The armed forces involved in the conflict are also presented. We were also interested in the readiness of the Republic of Slovenia for possible attack with chemical weapons, therefore National Protection and Rescue Plan have been examined and presented. We have found out that the Republic of Slovenia is well prepared for possible terrorist attacks with chemical weapons. For research purposes a survey was sent to the students of the Faculty of Criminal Justice and Security, because we were interested in how threatened they feel by any terrorist attack with chemical weapons, and if they are aware of the consequences of the use of chemical weapons and protection against it. Research has shown that students do not feel threatened by possible terrorist attacks using chemical weapons, and they do not know about protection against its effects, but they know the consequences of the use of chemical weapons.
