Abstract:According to general belief, the elderly belong to the group of people that feel more threatened than younger generations due to old age and vulnerability. However, statistic data shows that the elderly are not the most frequent crime victims. There are many factors that influence the perception of a threat and its related fear of criminality such as demographic characteristics (sex, age, society, economic situation etc.), media, victimization and socio-psychological characteristics of each individual. The experts who study the fear of crime do not agree on the issue afore mentioned. Some of them believe that the elderly suffer from the fear of crime at a higher rate than the young whereas the others believe the exact opposite. Some experts believe that age has no influence on the feeling of fear at all. Furthermore, the opinion about the factors of feeling threatened also varies. One of the most common opinion is the belief that the elderly feel fear more often because they are more vulnerable and possess less means to control victimization. The research results show that the elderly do not feel threatened nor are they often victims of criminal offence. The fear of crime is mostly triggered by feeling vulnerable. What the elderly have in common is their highest concern of becoming victims of either property criminal offence or physical assault. Both, health and financial difficulties concern them more than crime itself as they do not want to feel lonely or become someone’s burden. The head of Kamnik Police Station believes that physical, economic and social vulnerability contribute most to feeling vulnerable. The representatives of Društvo SOS telefon, Društvo Lipa and Kamnik Social Work Centre believe that social isolation is the biggest problem the elderly deal with.
