Title:WORLD WAR I IN ARTISTIC DEPICTIONS IN SLOVENIAN STYRIA
Abstract:In this diploma thesis, we will learn about the artistic activity during the First World War in the territory of Slovenian Styria. With that, we will look deeply into the work of Luigi Kasimir (1881–1962) and Jan Oeltjen (1880–1968), who were not Slovenes by nationality and did not take part in the war on the Slovene Styrian part; they were, however, strongly tied to our region, especially Ptuj. Kasimir was born in Ptuj, whereas Oeltjen often visited Ptuj where he spent a lot of time with his wife Elsa Kasimir and finally settled there. Their work from the time of the Great War is of great quality, expressive as well as full of meaning. They captured war with their artistic language in two completely different ways, each of them with a lot of emotional elation and personal connotation. Many of their works, which were created as a result of wartime events in which both artists were caught, bear witness to the artistic life during the time of battles. Their contribution to the understanding of human indignation against the horrors of the war satisfies us, as their own experiences give additional emotional support to their artwork. Many works of art were created during the Great War, such as diverse war postcards, which testify about the propaganda politics, life in the hinterland and on the battlefields. The expansion of photography is also very important, as the emergence of this kind of scene capturing became faster and more persistant. The primary art activities, however, still had a significant impact. We would also like to point out some other artists who are important for the understanding of art activity during the First World War in Slovenian Styria. These were painters Karel Jirak (1897–1982) and Ante Trstenjak (1894–1970); and sculptors Ivan Napotnik (1888–1960) and Jožef Ajlec (1874–1944). The war influenced their lives and work as some of their artworks were created as a reflection of wartime events, and kept reflecting in their later creations. Fine art in the time of the First World War in Slovenian Styria is a specific phenomenon that needs to be systematically and clearly studied, as it is important for the understanding of life during the time of general confusion, shortage, war horrors and hatred. The most expressive works were created at the scenes of wartime events, therefore providing us with a first-hand image of the life at the front as well as capturing thoughts of individuals who found themselves in the midst of war.
