Abstract:V diplomski nalogi smo predstavili odnos do živali v svetovnih religijah. Vključili smo hinduizem, budizem, judaizem, krščanstvo in islam. Cilji so bili ugotoviti osnovni odnos do živali, simboliko živali, izkoriščanje živali za prehrano ljudi in odnos do poskusov na živalih. Analizo smo opravili s pomočjo domače in tuje strokovne literature.

Title:COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF ATTITUDES TOWARDS ANIMALS IN WORLD RELIGIONS
Abstract:Within this diploma thesis, we presented the attitudes towards animals in world religions. Our research included Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The aims were to find out the basic attitudes towards animals, animal symbolism, the exploitation of animals for human consumption, and the attitudes towards animal experiments. The analysis was conducted with the help of Slovenian as well as foreign academic literature. The analysis showed that the attitudes towards animals are in some respects very similar in all religions considered in our research. What stands out is the superiority of a human in the relationship with an animal, since all religions discussed in this thesis acknowledge humans having higher status than animals. This can clearly be seen in the finding that none of religions discussed oppose animal experiments in the case when their purpose is the improvement of human health, or when human well-being is considered. The use of specific animal species as religious symbols is a characteristic of all religions discussed, moreover, we found out that animal symbolism is much wider and more powerful in older religions, such as Hinduism and Buddhism. It is interesting that these particular two also have the highest percentage of vegetarians, which could partly be connected to the increased importance of worshipping animals, and partly to the doctrine of fundamental unity of the nature and reciprocal close linkage between a human and his natural environment.
Keywords:Animals, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, symbolism, nourishment, animal experiments.
