Title:FRANC VIDRIH AND MEMOIRS OF THE LITTORAL PARATROOPERS DESTINY
Abstract:The British wanted to expand their intelligence activity during the Second World War in the northernmost part of Yugoslavia, i.e. in Slovenia. The main British intelligence services that used to send their agents to the missions into Yugoslavia and Slovenia were Special Operation Executive (SOE) and Inter-Services Liaison Department (ISLD), the latest operating in Military Intelligence 6 (MI6). At the beginning, SOE was focused on Southern Yugoslavia, since it was the centre of pan Yugoslav resistance movements. Eventually, the rumours appeared that it would be more efficient to operate in Croatia and even more in Slovenia. The British initially had access to very limited information from their own sources about the actual events in occupied Yugoslavia. Therefore, they were particularly interested in littoral Slovenians that were captured as Italian soldiers in Africa by the allies. These prisoners were being recruited to work in the Royal Yugoslav Army by Yugoslav officers and they also attracted the attention of British secret services in the camps for the prisoners of war. The latest chose some appropriate candidates to participate in the courses for special operations. Expecting reports, the British sent them to the occupied Slovenian territory. Upon landing, most of these paratroopers joined the partisans. Despite their sincere fight against the Nazi fascism some of them became victims of the communist secret services liquidations towards the end of the war and after it.
