Osnovne tri teorije, teorija nevtralnosti, teorija negativnega vpliva in teorija pozitivnega vpliva, povsem različno opisujejo vpliv izplačevanja dividend na ceno delnice in s tem vrednost podjetja.

Title:DIVIDEND POLICY AND STOCK PRICE REACTION TO DIVIDEND ANNOUNCEMENTS
Abstract:Dividend policy decision is a management decision on what proportion of current profit will be used to finance future investment project and how much will the company transfer to its shareholders through dividends. Shareholder returns only come in two forms (1) stock price change and (2) dividends received (cash or non-cash). We can clearly see that dividend policy is important, because it directly impacts shareholder wealth. To maximize shareholder value should be the main goal of every management. Even though there are a lot of dividend policy theories, management faces a hard decision choosing the right one due to their contradictory. Three basic theories, bird-in-the-hand theory, dividend irrelevance theory and tax preference theory all have a different explanation on how dividend payment affects stock price – value of the company. A lot of research in this area has led to almost as many other theories which are mostly derived from the three basic ones. One of the derived theories is dividend signaling theory which argues that because of the information asymmetry between management and shareholders, former have more and better information about current situation in the company and about future prospects. The theory says that with dividend policy management signals this information to investors. Dividend signaling theory has been tested by many authors in last decades and most of them had concluded that there is a positive stock price reaction to dividend increase announcements. Research has been done both on developed and developing markets. In this master thesis methodology from other international research was adopted and existence of dividend signaling theory was tested on Slovenian stock exchange. Stock price reaction to dividend increase announcements of Slovenian stocks that are listed on SBI TOP index was analyzed. Slovenian stock market is unique because of its low liquidity and small size. We have analyzed 2008-2012 period and no statistically significant influence on stock price was discovered. Therefore we have dismissed the null hypothesis and with that the dividend signaling theory on Slovenian stock exchange.
