Abstract:	Magistrsko delo se osredotoča na analizo modernističnih pripovednih postopkov v romanih Tostran raja in Veliki Gatsby avtorja F. Scott Fitzgeralda, ki je ameriški modernistični pisatelj. V svojih romanih je prikazoval razmere in družbo v začetku 20. stol., ki je bila deležna številnih sprememb. Konec 19. stol. in začetek 20. stol. so zaznamovala politična gibanja, razvoj znanosti in tehnologije, 1. svetovna vojna, množično priseljevanje in spremembe v družbi in kulturi. Pisatelji so iskali nov literarni slog, ki bi ustrezal novemu času in odražal spremembe 20. stol. Razvila se je nova literarna smer, imenovana modernizem. Namen magistrske naloge je bil, da na primerih romanov Tostran raja in Veliki Gatsby potrdimo tezo, da je Fitzgerald za prikazovanje zavesti literarnih likov uporabljal modernistične pripovedne postopke. Za analizo modernističnih pripovednih postopkov, vezanih na prvoosebno in tretjeosebno pripoved, je uporabljena teorija Dorrit Cohn. Iz analize je razvidno, da sta v romanu Tostran raja prevladujoča modernistična postopka citirani monolog in pripoved o zavesti lika. V romanu Veliki Gatsby pa prevladujeta pripoved o lastni zavesti lika in samocitirani monolog. Modernistični pripovedni postopki podajajo notranje misli literarnih likov in služijo za prikazovanje čustev in notranjih občutij literarnih likov. Z analizo jezika in karakterizacijo literarnih oseb je bilo ugotovljeno, da je v ospredju subjektivizem in individualizem, saj so pogoste besede in besedne zveze, ki opisujejo notranje občutje literarnih likov. Značaji literarnih likov prikazujejo spremenjene vrednote začetka 20. stol., pogubno moč denarja in krizo identitete. Ugotovljeno je bilo, da je Fitzgerald pogosto črpal teme in motive iz svojega življenja. Fitzgeraldova dela so še vedno zelo brana, saj je tematika romanov brezčasna, ker opisuje svet bogatih, povzpetništvo, moralno praznino, eksistencialne krize in neizživeto ljubezen.

Title:	MODERNIST NARRATIVE TECHNIQUES IN THE NOVELS THIS SIDE OF PARADISE AND THE GREAT GATSBY BY F. SCOTT FITZGERALD
Abstract:	The thesis focuses on the analysis of modernist narrative in novels This Side of Paradise and The Great Gatsby, by the author F. Scott Fitzgerald, who is an American modernist writer. His novels show the situation and the society in the early 20th century, which has been the focus of many changes. The end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century was marked by political movements, the development of science and technology, the first World War, mass immigration, and changes in the society and culture. The writers were looking for a literary style that would match the new time, and reflect the changes in the 20th century. A new literary direction was developed, called modernism. The purpose of the master's thesis is, with the novels This Side of Paradise and The Great Gatsby, to confirm the theory that Fitzgerald used modernist narrative to show consciousness of literary characters. For the analysis of modernist narrative, related to first person and third person narrative, is used Dorrit Cohn's theory. The analysis shows that in the novel This Side of Paradise the dominant modernist procedures are quoted monologue and the character's narrative, in the novel The Great Gatsby the dominant procedures are narrative of selfawareness and selfquoted monologue. Modernist narrative methods provide inner thoughts of literary characters and serve to show emotions and inner feelings of them. With analyzing the language and characterizing the literary characters it was found that subjectivism and individualism are in the foreground, as there are commonly used words and phrases that describe the inner feelings of literary characters. The character of literary figures show changed values in the beginning of the 20th century, devastating power of money and identity crisis. It was found that Fitzgerald often drew on themes and motifs of his own life. His works are still widely read because the theme of his novels is timeless, it describes the world of the rich, social climbing, moral emptiness, existential crisis and unrealized love.
