Title:SEX AND WOMEN IN THE WORKS OF CHARLES BUKOWSKI AND HENRY MILLER
Abstract:The thesis Sex and Women in the Works of Charles Bukowski and Henry Miller sheds light on the American prose during the time of sexual revolution and early stages of its awakening. The latter has consequently led to freedom of expression in literary works. The paramount purpose of this paper is to investigate the selected works of both authors, in which the autobiographical aspects of eroticism and relationships with multiple women are clearly depicted and reflected. I have ratified the analysis with fundamental concepts of sexuality, eroticism and sexual practices. By studying the lives of both authors and reading of selected works, I have also broached the question of genre classification in corresponded novels, which are often labelled as erotic, obscene, and pornographic. Despite a number of allegations, it has become clear that the before mentioned remarks are only partially true. The novels could be perceived as such, merely because of a genuine depiction of reality and authors who are a part of it. The profound analysis of themes and motifs in the works in question has shown a realistic portrayal of everyday life which is contrary to social principles of the era. Hence the authors' personal experiences have strongly influenced the attitude and views on sexuality which are reflected in their works. Moreover, female characters in the selected novels are taken from authors' real lives, and are perceived as inferior to male characters.
