Abstract:Policisti in kriminalisti pri preiskovanju kaznivih dejanj neprestano komunicirajo z osebami v postopkih.

Abstract:Police officers and detectives are constantly communicating with the people they are processing during criminal investigations. Communication is one of their most frequent tasks. This is why it is important that they are skilled in verbal and nonverbal communication. The officers acquire important data that could benefit the investigation, by collecting information from the suspects or witnesses. It is crucial that they are able to tell whether the suspects or witnesses are lying or misleading them during the interviews. Deception can be determined by understanding the nonverbal communication of the interlocutor, as well as by an analysis of what was said. This dissertation is divided into a theoretical and an empirical part. Nonverbal communication is presented in the theoretical part by segments. The use of nonverbal communication in criminal investigation is discussed separately, with emphasis on discovering lies or deception. The empirical part presents findings which were obtained from police employees with the help of a questionnaire. Findings show that most of the participants pay attention to nonverbal communication, especially when dealing with a suspect. The participants estimate that nonverbal communication is important, and they rely on it most often in order to discover lies and deception. The participants also believe that they are more successful in discovering lies than most people, but the research does not confirm that. Most of the participants think that they are not qualified enough to determine the right interpretation of nonverbal communication, or to consistently discover lies. They are, however, prepared to train in the field of nonverbal communication.
