Title:DIMENSIONING OF THE MAIN PART OF THE STEEL RAILWAY KELANIYA BRIDGE ON SRI LANKA
Abstract:The master thesis deals with the dimensioning of the main part of the steel truss railway Kelaniya Bridge in Sri Lanka with bolted joints according to the Eurocode standard. The total length of the bridge is 262,90 m. The bridge consist of the following three parts: an entry steel bridge, the main part of the bridge and an entry reinforced concrete bridge. The main part of the bridge includes three steel truss structures with a span of 51,70 m each. The thesis is focused on the design of the steel truss structure for a fatigue resistance. For this purpose, a historical and technical background of the fatigue is explained. The design of the bridge for fatigue is made with damage equivalent factors based on the load model LM71. The bridge is also designed for the ultimate limit state, giving the global analysis and the dimensioning of the structure, based on the second order effects with the consideration of the global and local imperfections, as well as the structure check with the equivalent column method. In addition the lower structure with a deep foundation is designed for the ultimate limit state. The comparison between different levels of exploitation of the structure’s cross sections, based on the ultimate limit state and the fatigue calculation, is given at the end of the thesis.
