Abstract:
Prikazan je razvoj geografskega informacijskega sistema (GIS) v svetu in pri nas ter njegove glavne komponente in funkcije. Med številnimi disciplinami, ki s svojimi bazami podatkov tvorijo GIS, je posebna pozornost namenjena geografiji. Namen članka je osvetliti pomen in vlogo, ki naj bi jo geografija zavzemala znotraj informacijskega sistema.

The role of geography in geographic information systems (GIS)
Abstract:
This article discusses the development of GIS, its main comonents and functions, in the world and at home. Among numerous disciplines, which with their data base creatle the Geographic Informational System, the special emphasis is on geography. The purpose of this article is to illuminate the significance and the role that geography should play within the informational system.
