Title:Impact of learning activities without computer on understanding programming concepts in primary school
Abstract:Introduction of the subject Computer Science as an optional elective subject (OES) in the Slovenian curriculum for primary schools has brought a question of how to effectively teach students the concepts of programming. We have prepared activities without using a computer to determine whether an understanding of programming concepts is more effective when students are given an activity without using a computer. We focused mainly on the understanding of the conditional sentence, but we also checked the understanding of the concept of tracking instructions and the concept of repetition. We checked the knowledge of the concept of conditional sentence and the knowledge of the concept of tracking instruction and repetition with a pretest, while we checked the acquired knowledge of the conditional sentence and the strength of knowledge to follow directions and repetition with an after test. The results of the test were compared with the groups that did not carry out the activities with a computer. We also prepared an additional test with which we wanted to check whether the students knowledge about the concepts strengtened during that time. From the test results we found out that the performance of activites without a computer contributes to a better knowledge of the concepts of programming. We noticed that students have the most problems with the coordinate system, degrees (turn left and turn right) and mathematical expressions such as »the distance to the Dancer < 20« in Scratch. We can conclude that the activity should be prepared in a way to contain the commands of the Scratch program, so that students also learn the importance of individual commands and concepts of programming.
