Title:Synthesis and characterization of maghemite nanoparticles (γ-Fe2O3) for applications in osmotic processes
Abstract:The aim of the thesis is to synthesize maghemite nanoparticles (γ-Fe2O3) coated with polyethyleneglycol (PEG) and a suitable osmotic pressure, which are designed for use in cleaning water through the method of forward osmosis (FO). In the thesis, we carried out three different procedures for the preparation of magnetic maghemite nanoparticles. We also used surfactant PEG, with three different molecular weight. Depending on the selected options and with the help of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-Ray diffraction (XRD) we characterized synthesized nanoparticles. From the results the size of the nanoparticles can be estimated by Scherrer equation. The results of the TGA and XRD analysis have shown that while heating the samples a transformation occurs from maghemite to hematite at a temperature of around 600 °C, which corresponds with the data in the literature. Measurements of osmotic pressure have shown that the particles are not suitable for the intended application as they do not supply sufficient osmotic pressure for planning the draw solution in FO.
