Najboljše rezultate smo dosegli s 180 min elektrokoagulacijo pri U = 15 V, r = 3 cm in začetnem pH 6,1, kjer smo s 100 % učinkovitostjo odstranili Cu2+ in Cr6+, Fe2+ 99,4 %, Mn2+ 97,8 %, Zn2+ 90 % in Ni2+ 44 %.

Title:Metal removal from compost leachate
Abstract:The purpose of the diploma was to investigate the removal of heavy metal ions from compost leachate, generated by processing of biodegradable waste in the composting plant of the tutoring company Kogal, with electrocoagulation. In addition to heavy metal ions, we also examined the presence of organic substances with the level of chemical oxygen demand (COD). We sought to create the optimal conditions for the electrocoagulation of compost leachate with an examination of the physical-chemical parameters and preliminary experiments. The best results were attained with an 180 min electrocoagulation at U = 15 V, r = 3 cm and initial pH 6,1, where the removal efficiency of Cu2+ and Cr6+ were 100 %, Fe2+ 99,4 %, Mn2+ 97,8 %, Zn2+ 90 % and Ni2+ 44 %. The COD level was further reduced by 36 %. After finishing the preliminary tests, we analyzed the measurements and determined the most efficient conditions for electrocoagulation: t = 90 min, U = 15 V, r = 3 cm, initial pH 6, preliminary water centrifugation for 5 min at 8000 rpm. Because of the different compounds in the compost leachate used in this experiment, the efficiency of metal ion removal efficiency was not as effective: Cr6+ 87,4 %, Cu2+ 76,8 %, Zn2+ 66,3 %, Fe2+ 61,2 %, Mn2+ 53,9 % and Ni2+ 0,7 %; however, we managed to successfully reduce the COD level by 75 %. The experiment in conditions we believe to be most efficient demonstrate that we cannot base the conditions for compost leachate treatment on the results of previous measurements, as they vary due to the composition of compost leachate that we wish to purify. We have established that we can remove metal ions from compost leachate with electrocoagulation, but the COD level is reduced to a lesser extent. However, it could be used as a method for pre-purification as a preliminary water purification treatment.
