Title:MEDIA EDUCATION IN FIRST AND SECOND CYCLE OF PRIMARY SCHOOL
Abstract:Nowadays, the media education is an extremely important area in the modern media society. It involves education and learning to work with the media, which will be beneficial in education and helpful with certain tasks. The media are the messages that travel from the sender to the receiver. Therefore they transmit certain contents from the creator or author to the readers, listeners or viewers (Potočkar in Tavčar Krajnc, 2011). Media education is a compulsory subject in many countries around the world, meanwhile in Slovenia it only occurs as an extra-curricular activity and since 1997 also as an elective subject (Dragan, 1998). Media education is of remarkable importance for today's youth, especially since it is mostly the newer technology that brings positive as well as negative influences. Therefore, it is right for the young people to reach for modern media, but we have to learn them to use it wisely. Given that young people quickly adopt innovations in this area, there should not be a major problem with an appropriate media education. Therefore, my master thesis researches the influence of media-supportive or discouraging family environment as well as school environment on a child's proper use of the media and the extent to which the students of the 4th class of elementary school (where I conducted the survey) are familiar with the safe use of the Internet.
