Title:EFFECTS OF ANXIETY ON WORKING MEMORY AND EXECUTING FUNCTIONING IN ELDERLY
Abstract:Topic and goals: The topic and goals of the master's thesis were to determine whether effects of anxiety on working memory and executive functioning in elderly exist. We predicted that anxiety will be connected with cognitive performance, which would be reflected in correlations between the severity of anxiety and the scores on neuropsychological tests. Moreover, the goal of the thesis was also to examine the impact of education on cognitive performance. We predicted correlations between a longer education (and therefore a higher level of cognitive reserve) and better scores on tests. We also wanted to determine whether there are gender differences in the effects of anxiety in elderly on their cognitive functioning. Finally, we wanted to examine which anxiety sympthoms elderly exprience most. We predicted that somatic sympthoms will be the most pronounced. Methodology: We tested 50 elderly (19 M and 31 W), aged between 65 and 98 years. All of the participants completed Geriatric Anxiety Scale, which we used to test anxiety. After the initial testing with the screening test KPSS, we continued neuropsychological testing with those elderly, who achieved the score of 19 or more points. The sample then consisted of 42 participants (18 M and 24 W), aged between 65 and 98 years with 8 to 14 years of education. Testing included the Stroop test, Digit Span forward and backward and the TMT – parts A and B. Results: We established that the anxiety of the whole and men sample partially impacts functioning of the working memory (on phonological loop and central executive) and executive functions (on set-shifting) as results show statistically significant correlations on Digits span tests and TMT-B. Other correlations were not statistically significant. There also were no statistically significant correlations between cognitive tests and education duration, accept on Digit span forward. This means that the cognitive reserve, as a result of a longer education, mostly does not have an effect on better cognitive performance of the elderly. We also established that most elderly experience the most anxiety symptoms on the somatic subscale.
