Title:LOVE AND EROTICISM IN THE SELECTED WORKS OF MARGUERITE DURAS
Abstract:The thesis illuminates the decadent life of the famous Marguerite Duras and her impressive oeuvre, which consists of prose, drama and film. It is especially focusing on the analysis of the themes of eroticism and love in three selected works; Moderato Cantabile, The Lover, and No More. In all three works the theme is being developed among the two, between a man and a woman whose love is disabled in advance because of the unsurmountable obstacles. The analysis and reconstructions of stories and novels Moderato Cantabile, The Lover and diary novel No More have shown that Duras' life has been highly integrated into the eroticism of bodies and hearts, which I have interpreted through the concept of eroticism. Literary history inducts Duras into modernism and postmodernism, with it in the modern novel, and even more to the French new novel, which can especially be noticed in Moderato Cantabile, although the author herself did not identify with this movement. The author filled her stories with fragments, extracts and film and impressionists' paintings. She ripped the story from her works and without any literary ornaments she psychologies the protagonists with the aesthetic writing. Moderato Cantabile introduces eroticism of hearts, which brings a total feeling of powerlessness into Desbaresdes Anne and Chauvin and because of which their physical sexuality cannot be expressed elsewhere than in death. The Lover was overstrained by eroticism of bodies, there is a feeling of the unbearable pain because of the forbidden meetings of a young white woman and a rich Chinese man, their eroticism is exhausted in brutality, in a stroke, characterized by extreme pain. Diary novel No More is the last record of Marguerite Duras' last life partner. Yann Andrea has collected her thoughts on dying – the artist said goodbye to her literary works as well as to her Chinese lover. The author, infested with disease and alcohol, accompanied her departure to her own death, which will become the practice of her eroticism of bodies and hearts.
