Abstract:V ospredje diplomske naloge je postavljen kulturnozgodovinski prikaz slovenske Štajerske v 19. stoletju.

Title:SLOVENIAN STYRIA IN THE 19TH CENTURY, A CULTURAL-HISTORICAL OUTLINE
Abstract:The main part of the diploma thesis presents a cultural-historical account of the Styrian area in the 19th century. In the introduction of the thesis there is a short outline of the period, which radically changed and marked the history of Slovenia mostly in a political and cultural aspect. The turning point of 1848 and the program called »Zedinjena Slovenija« were of crucial significance for the awakening of Slovenians as an independent nation and their national consciousness. That was definitely a foundation, which started to connect the Slovenian lands, which were very fragmented up to that point. Despite the German supremacy, lower Styrian towns Maribor, Celje, Ptuj and other smaller, but not less important towns and squares had a lot of potential in the area of the assertion of Slovenian language, which were reflected in the culture and schooling as well as in economy and politics. One of the most important events for Styrians in the 19th century was the transfer of the seat of the Lavant bishopric from St. Andraž in the Koroška region to Maribor in 1859. Establishing the first clubs, reading rooms and camps in Styria elevated the region to the top of the development of the Slovenian lands. These organizations were spreading national consciousness and the meaning of equality of the Slovenian language with local musical, theatre and cultural events, with reading and writing Slovenian literature and with various motivational speeches. As the central Styrian town, which was the most affected by the Germanization in the 19th century, Maribor played a crucial role in the political fight of the Slovenian nation for its independence and identity. By publishing journals and newspapers with a clear stance against the German rule and the supporters of the German nation, they proved that we are a strong nation. Undoubtedly, the Styrian leaders, who contributed to realizing the goals set by the Slovenian nation with their eager and diligent work, were the ones who were responsible for the positive changes. They represented the roots of the mosaic of the Slovenian linguistic-cultural development and the notability of the language itself. The credit for these accomplishments goes to them because they knew how to show the true meaning and power of national consciousness and the Slovenian language, which was gaining more and more validity towards the end of the 19th century.
