Title:Opinions about deviance of the 2nd generation of immigrants in Ljubljana
Abstract:Information on the financial condition, educational attainment, values and delinquency of second-generation immigrants to Slovenia differs substantially from the opinions of these immigrants. The interviewees of this study disagree with the previous studies that have shown that non-Slovenian families supposedly have less favourable family and socioeconomic conditions. They believe that this does not depend on nationality but on an individual family and opportunities in the labour market. One half of the interviewees disagree that non-Slovenian youth have parents with lower educational attainment and that this is merely a prejudice. The interviewees also disagree with studies that indicate that non-Slovenian youth are on average exposed to more violence in family upbringing. The main role is not played by nationality but by the parents' character and their upbringing. They agree that values and customs are enforced and fostered more in immigrant families than in the families of native inhabitants. Even though studies show that Slovenian youth is less involved in the perpetration of criminal offences than youth of other nationalities, the interviewees disagree. The majority agree that nationality does not play a part in attitude towards violence. Studies show that immigrants feel included and accepted in the Slovenian society and believe that the Slovenians have a positive attitude towards them. Our interviewees partially agree with that. None of the interviewees however agree with the positive attitude of Slovenians towards immigrants. They believe this attitude to be negative, as many people search for the cause of their problems in immigrants. As regards discrimination in schools, the interviewees completely agree with the findings of previous studies: in principle, discrimination is not present, there are only individual acts of prejudice. As evident from the conducted study, interviewees mostly hold opinions that are contrary to the findings of past studies.
