Abstract:Predmet raziskovanja so ženske v obdobju srednjega veka na področju Bizantinskega cesarstva. Cerkveni in posvetni pisci so žensko prikazovali v negativni podobi.

Title:THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN THE BYZANTINE COURT
Abstract:The research focuses on women in the Middle Ages from the Byzantine Empire. The life of women in that period differed from country to country, but by considering all the sources and historical texts we realize, that the general opinion about women was all the same. Religious and secular writers depicted the image of a woman in a negative way. This image was completely subordinated to the man. The women had to abide all the rules and norms, which were considered normal by the family and by her social status. In comparison to the man, they were unequal which was reflected in their legal, political, social and also in their everyday life. By situating women in the center of the research we realize their importance and meaning for the history. The evidence which proves that we find women in the Middle Ages, who became equally recognized to the men even in politics, were the three Byzantine empresses: Teodora, Irena and Zoe. In their diverse and rich lives, the way they came to power, the way they ruled and by the way they were thinking, we found certain parallels to the zeitgeist of the Middle Ages, nevertheless we should not neglect their roles, which were definitely untypical for that time.
