Abstract:Javne odprte površine – trgi predstavljajo središče socialnega življenja mest. So prostori združevanj in srečevanj, kjer posamezniki z vzpostavljanjem različnih socialnih stikov oblikujejo družbeno podobo prostora in življenja v njem. Rezultati terenskega dela so pokazali, da so trgi prvenstveno še vedno prostori prehodov, vendar kljub temu v določeni meri spodbujajo socialno funkcijo.

Title:Social function of public open spaces in Maribor on selected cases
Abstract:Public open spaces – squares represent the centre of social life of cities. They are spaces of reunions and gatherings where individuals, by establishing various social connections, form the social image of a space and life in it. Squares are also centres of numerous activities intended to fulfil basic human needs. The purpose of this graduation thesis was to determine the social function of public open spaces, specifically squares. Type and number of activities on the square and number of visitors who use the square define its social function. The social function was identified on three chosen squares in Maribor, the Glavni trg Square, the Grajski trg Square and the Leon Štukelj Square. The basic methodological approaches for obtaining relevant data were field observations with behavioural mapping and mapping of activities. The results of the fieldwork show that squares are primarily still spaces of passing, although they promote the social function to a certain extent. Differences in the number of visitors and differences in their structure are noticeable among squares. This indicates the social-functional differentiation of squares. Social Geography considers events in space through a dimension of time. This also implies that the social function of squares changes in time.
