Title:STRATEGIES USED BY TEACHERS TO DISCIPLINE PRESCHOOL CHILDREN
Abstract:The purpose of this diploma paper was to determine to what extent kindergarten teachers use punishment as an educational method. The study included 100 kindergarten teachers from the Podravska region. For this purpose, a questionnaire was created in order to determine the proportion of using punishment as an educational method in comparison of using remuneration method. Surprisingly, the results revealed the teachers did not asses the punishment as a good nor as a bad means of education method, therefore, it could not be clearly concluded whether their opinion about the punishment as an educational method is more inclined towards the negative or towards the positive. Based on the semantic differential of the standpoint towards punishment, it could, however, be concluded that despite the apparent teachers’ opinion sentencing children is a negative educational method, they value it as positive. 100 teachers completed the questionnaire survey and only 10 of them claimed they absolutely do not apply punishment when working with children. The teachers predominantly tend to avoid using verbal punishment and mainly use methods of prohibition, confiscation of things and withdrawal of popular activities. Long-term employed kindergarten teachers make use of various forms of punishment and, in most cases, advocate punishment and regard its influence on children as beneficial. On the other hand, teachers with fewer years of work experience tend to sanction children with various forms of prohibitions.
