Dandanes ni nič nenavadnega, da otroci, stari devet do dvanajst let, že uporabljajo spletna socialna omrežja, čeprav predpisi določenih spletnih socialnih omrežij zahtevajo starost vsaj trinajst let. Priljubljenost spletnih socialnih omrežij zadnje čase presega vsa pričakovanja. Portali, kjer si uporabniki izmenjujejo informacije, mnenja, fotografije, se povezujejo, prijateljujejo, so nov komunikacijski fenomen in so del vsakdana mnogih ljudi.

Title:USE AND RISK OF SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES AMONG CHILDREN
Abstract:More and more people are joining social networking sites every day; they are not interesting just for the (young) adults and older people, but also for children. Nowadays, it is not unusual that children aged between nine and twelve are already users of social networks, despite the fact that the regulations on certain social networks require their users to be at least thirteen years of age. Lately, the popularity of social networks has been exceeding all expectations. Websites, where users exchange information, opinions, photographs, make connections and forge new friendships have become a communication phenomenon and are a part of an everyday of many people. "If you're not on Facebook, you do not exist", is a saying that contains more than just a grain of truth. The Master's thesis is divided into two parts. The theoretical parts brings a presentation of the characteristics of social sites, definition of children, as well as the presentation of popular web sites, such as Facebook, Google Plus, Tweeter based on the frequency of use. The thesis contains various possibilities of how to access social networks and how to use web and social networks safely. Additionally, dangers and risks of using social networks are presented, such as identity theft, misuse of personal data, cyberbullying, inappropriate content, hate speech on social networks, promotion of racism, sexual abuse of children on social networks, cyberstalking, child pornography and amongst the young ever more popular sexting. The second part of the Master's thesis consists of an empirical research, the goal of which was to investigate the use of social networks amongst children and the dangers they face. In the empirical part of the thesis we established if children aged between ten to thirteen use certain social networks, which and how often. We investigated which devices they use to access social networks, what sort of data and photographs they publish, who can see their published posts, how they protect themselves from risks and threats, what is their purpose for using social networks, what are the average number and age of their online friends, have they ever faced any of the above-mentioned risks of social networks, do they discuss their online activities, contents, risks and measures that need to be carried out in case of risky use of social networks with their parents. In the end of the research, we were interested whether children aged between ten to thirteen have been encountered with sexting.
