Title:The influence of rock mineral wool on water retention in pot substrate
Abstract:The main objective of the research was to study the influence of rock mineral wool on water retention in the substrate. The experiment was performed in the year 2013, in the greenhouse of the Faculty of Agriculture and Life Science, in Hoče. It consisted of six treatments in three repetitions and was designed as a randomized block. Different proportions and forms of rock mineral wool (RMW), mixed with industrial substrate (S) (each proportion presented individual treatment) were tested. We found that different proportions and forms of RMW had different effect on the amount of retained water in the substrate. Water measurements were performed in ten days intervals. The best results were obtained by the treatment with 60% RMW + 40% S, in which the amount of retained water was 618,6 ml, while the treatment with 20% RMW + 80% S showed the smallest amount of retained water (353,7 ml). Higher humidity of the substrate was achieved by using the rock mineral wool cubes. The control teratment held a very small amount of water (372,6 ml) when compared with other treatments. We found a positive correlation between humidity and electroconductivity in the substrate. A higher electroconductivity was measured at higher amounts of retained water in the substrate.
