Title:The perception of actual and necessary communication skills of accountants among postgraduate students
Abstract:The accounting profession increasingly emphasizes the importance of non-accountancy skills that facilitate effective use of technical skills of accountants in practice. The skills that stand out among those, are the communication skills, which are generally viewed by the accountants and employers to have the highest importance. Due to a general perception of accountants having poorly developed communication skills, the research of business communication in accounting has primarily been focused on identifying the differences between the actual and required communication skills, as well as on the study of apprehension regarding communication. The past research also examined the issue of sufficient communication skills, especially of graduates, when they actually find employment. Since this topic is still insufficiently researched in Slovenia, the aim of our study was to examine the differences between self-perception of students regarding their communication skills, and the actually required skills of the accountants. The results of the study confirmed that there are differences among students from various fields of expertise in the self-perception of their communication skills, while the differences in the perception of the required communication skills of accountants among students have not been confirmed. The results in the population of students of accounting also confirmed that there were differences in perception of their actual, and required communication skills.
