Title:POSTTRAUMATIC STRESS IN CROATIA TWENTY-FOUR YEARS AFTER THE WAR OF INDEPENDENCE
Abstract:In this thesis, we were interested, if 24 years after the war in Croatia, people are still suffering from trauma or have they already forgotten about what has happened to them so many years ago. Post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD is the result of a tragic event or events experienced by a person. This shock is then deep into a person's memory and stays there forever. Traumatized persons largely withdraw themselves and struggle alone with whatever haunts them, so they need support from others, as their friends and supporters may greately ease their fight. The war in Croatia lasted for 5 years. Like any war, it required great sacrifices. The most terrible fact is that the coexistence of several nationalities immediately turned into the greatest hatred. Because the civilians were the primary aim of the aggressor's attacks the consequence was a large number of refugees and exiles, as well as wounded and dead. Many of them came into the hands of the aggressor and were tortured, receiving inhuman treatment. We talked with and interviewed fourteen people who have experienced this war, with the aim to find out how they live today. The first part of the interview consisted of two sets of questions; the first is linked to the experience of trauma and relationship with people and the second deals with the trauma itself. All this is necessary because we want to find out if the consequences of trauma have subsided after so many years. We were also interested whether the traumatized people avoid remembering traumatic events and if they succeed in doing so, whether after so many years they learned to recognize when anxiety will appear, and ultimately, whether after so many years they are able to function in society, to trust other people in their surroundings, and how the surroundings influences them. We found that the symptoms are still present and very strong, and these people are still suffering, especially because we as a society cannot even begin to imagine their pain.
